bullet  General Notes:

Samuel was Isaac Franklin's nephew.

He was born in Borispol in Kiev Gubernia. He later lived in Gorodishche in the Cherkassy district of Kiev Gubernia. Gorodishche is west of the city of Cherkassy and south of Kanev. His daughter Rose was born in Ekaterinoslav/Dnipropetrovsk where they moved before coming to the US.

Samuel founded the Franklin Glass Co. on Spring Garden St. between 6th and 7th Sts. in Philadelphia and later Franklin Auto Glass at 623-25 South Broad St. Robert Franklin has this as Broad St. and Snyder Ave. Samuel's extended family lived at 634 N. 6th St. near the former. Lois Sernoff has him manufacturing "glass for candy store case goods." Thus Samuel's entry into the glass business may have been directly related to the Schaff family candy case business.

In 1930, Samuel lived across the back alley from Harry Pollen. 4 6 8 9 11 12 13

bullet  Research Notes:

The US Census of 1910 has Samuel's age as 39, apparently incorrectly. Samuel's SS-5 has June 2, 1880, as his date of birth. His Petition for Naturalization has July 25, 1879.

The World War I draft registration has Samuel's birth date as July 25, 1878.

The census of 1920 has Samuel's immigration as 1899. It also has Samuel and Rebecca's place of birth as "Northern Russia" with the "Northern" crossed out.

Samuel's year of immigration is given in the 1930 census as 1902. His age is given as 52. Nathan and Sidney Needleman were boarders at Samuel's house.

The World War II draft registration has Samuel's place of birth as Ekaterinoslav. It has his date of birth as June 2, 1880. 4 9 13 14 15 16
