  General Notes:

Charles changed his name to BLUHM to prevent his parents from having him expelled from the U.S. Navy for being underage. He served at the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. Family legend had him slipping through the Chinese lines to inform the marines at the American embassy in Peking that help was on the way. 10

  Research Notes:

The US Census of 1920 has 1878 for year of immigration. In 1910, it was 1890.

Among Charles' neighbors at the same address are the families of Louis and Robert Horowitz. Could these be relations of Sarah Hurwitz?

The census of 1930 has Charles' place of birth as Vilna.

Bill Lucker has January 1885 as date of birth.

Charles is not mentioned in the letter from Shmuel Hurwitz of October, 1886.

The SSDI has Charles' date of birth as April 7, 1885, as does the California Death Index. The WWI draft registration has April 6. 2 6 7 11 12 13 14
