Joseph Benjamin BLOOM (1849-1901) |
Joseph Benjamin BLOOM 1
Other names for Joseph were Joseph Berman, Yosef Benesh, Yosef Berman, Yoshe Beinis, Yossi, Joseph Benjamin BLUHM, Josel CHONACH, Iosel HANOKH, Joseph Benjamin HENECH/CHENACH/CHENECH and Iosel KHONAKH. General Notes: Charles Bluhm bought the tombstone, hence "Joseph Benjamin Bluhm." Research Notes: Joseph's tombstone has 1851 as date of birth. Bill Lucker has 1900 for date of death. Noted events in his life were: 1. Residence, May 28, 1858, Saukenai, Siauliai, Kaunas, [Lithuania], Russian Empire. 9 Joseph was 8 years old. 2. Residence, 1877, Saukenai, Siauliai, Kaunas, [Lithuania], Russian Empire. 12 Joseph had a wooden house. 3. Employment, Jul 1883, Vilnius, [Lithuania], Russian Empire. 11 Yosef Berman worked at the brick factory for two rubles a day after leaving "his business." "Brick factory" is apparently a mistranslation, since the entry refers to an expansion from "Vilna to Lido, and from Lido it will connect with Minsk—that will bring a station closer to Kobeltsits." So it is fairly apparent that Yosef was working in some capacity for the railroad. 4. Transaction, May 1884, Vievis, [Lithuania], Russian Empire. 11 Joseph Berman sold his house. He wants to go to America but his wife won't let him. 5. Employment, Mar 1885, Vievis, [Lithuania], Russian Empire. 5 Joseph worked on a barge. 6. Event, Aug 1885, Vievis, [Lithuania], Russian Empire. 11 Joseph's horse died. 7. Embarkation, May 1886, Hamburg. 14 Destination: Glasgow, Scotland. 8. Embarkation, May 1886, Glasgow, Scotland. 8 9. Immigration, May 17, 1886, Castle Garden, New York, New York. 5 8 Joseph arrived on the SS Devonia. He was a peddler. His age is given as 36. 10. Business, Jun 1886, Hartford, Connecticut. 11 Joseph was a peddler. 11. Residence, 1890, 78 Charles Street, Hartford, Conn. 5 I have a suspicion that "78" may have been a misreading by the translator of an overly cursive "73". 12. Residence, Jun 12, 1900, 73 Charles Street, Hartford, Conn. 2 4 10 Joseph was a peddler. According to Marvin Bloom, Joseph came to America more than once prior to his official immigration date, during which period he shipped goods to the Midwest, then traveled there and sold them to the local residents. After he had made a sufficient amount of money, he returned to the Lithuanian part of Russia. There may be some connection between Joseph's peddling in the Midwest and the presence of Barnet Cooper and Chaya Geffen and their relations in Sioux City, Iowa. ED #147, page 15B. 13. Residence, Jun 2, 1901, 73 Charles Street, Hartford, Conn. 4 Joseph was a merchant. Joseph married Sarah Deborah HURWITZ, daughter of Samuel Halevi HURWITZ and Kreine Dvoshe ALPERT, in 1871. (Sarah Deborah HURWITZ was born in Dec 1851 in Vievis, Trakai, Vilnius, [Lithuania], Russian Empire?,2 died on Jan 26, 1931 in Hartford, Connecticut 2 3 and was buried in T12, HTFD Mutual Society, Ateres Israel, Mahl Ave, Hartford, Conn 3.) |
