Herbert would appear to have died sometime after the initial naval engagement of the 23rd through the 26th of October, 1944, i.e., the Battle of Leyte Gulf, when MacArthur began his retaking of the Philippines with an attack against the Japanese land forces on Leyte Island. He was a member of Company C, 381st Infantry Division.
