The 1900 census at Cambridge, Maryland, has him born in December of 1886. His WWII draft registration has him born on December 10, 1886, as does his WWI registration. ^{3 6 7 11}

Hog Island was the site of the American International Shipbuilding Corp., founded in 1917. 122 Liberty ships were built there. Hog Island was sold to Philadelphia in 1932. Hog Island sandwiches, the "hoggies" eaten by the Italian-Americans working at the shipyard, became the Philadelphia equivalent of the submarine sandwich, the hoagie.
