I recently received the following personal message from a detractor of Emily (Applemilk1988) on YouTube. Emily is an American anime fan (among many other things) in Japan. There seems to be a peculiar reaction to her love of Japan among certain Westerners (read Caucasians) that borders on racism. The message is followed by my reply, which, I hope, points out some of the deficiencies in their positions.

“I decided to send you a private message rather than spam KGKGKG's video and since you want to know why I hate her I need more characters than what the comment limit will allow.

“I hate her because she lies to her viewers and comes over as a pompous bitch in her more recent videos. I liked her older videos where she seemed like a nice girl but after watching the later ones which she now made private I knew there was something not quite right with her. So I found this livejournal: http://raspberrysyrup.livejournal.com

“This blog was kept by a former best friend of Emily's whom she decided to use to the point where she practically left him hanging. While in Japan she would get drunk, have sex with random Japanese men, and just leave her best friend by himself. She also had MORE money than he had but still made him pay for her little things. Her friend is at a higher level of Japanese than she was. Since she learned her Japanese but copying what he did. Listen to music. She makes tons of common mistakes when writing and speaking Japanese. Here's an example: "申し訳ございません、バンドやってるの! Which is mixing Keigo (Extremely formal Japanese) with very vulgar Japanese. She tends to sound like a male anime character for the fact that she uses words only males do in Japanese.

“She was fired from her "gravure idoling" job because ATOP said that they were having a problem with her visa (Seeing as she was on a student visa and was supposed to be attending a language which she really didn't bother to attend. Now not all Gravure Idoling is pornographic but ATOP (The company Emily get fired from) is. ATOP also said that she had no understanding of what the company wanted out of her nor the culture either.

“So also slandered Carolyn (Kerokeroin816) but making up rumors on 2ch (One of Japan's biggest online forums) and purposely going out of her way to try and ruin her. Also if you even mention Magibon to her she gets pissed and will delete your comment because she's jealous of Magibon's success. At least Magibon didn't claim that she was fluent in Japanese and said that she was learning it but Emily likes to lie and say she's fluent when she only knows Survival Japanese at best which can get her by but she can't hold up a very decent conversation without messing up big time.

“When she was hanging out with Kynapple, Kynapple watched her E-beg for money and they turn around and spend it on guitars and stuff that wouldn't help her get into University. So don't tell me she was genuinely putting it toward University. Now it's okay to donate to a Youtuber or website you like but you don't need to E-beg to do it. Just simply that if you want to donate feel free and leave it at that.

She also appeals to her Japanese base of fans all the time and practically ignoring her English speaking fans unless she's not getting what she needs from her Japanese fan base.. She doesn't give a shit about her English speaking fans otherwise and since her band event was a failure that Chris Gen cleverly edited in his video claiming that "Fif-Seventy" people showed up when in reality only 10 people showed up and most Japanese people couldn't find it. The people who did show up were other foreigners who make Youtube videos and the Japanese people there were a minority.

“Check out his Journal to find out more information about your "precious" Emily. He has screencaps of ACTUAL conversations and pictures that Emily sent to him personally.

“Have a great day!"

My reply:

I saw the raspberry site and the first thing I noticed was they couldn't even distinguish between Applemilk1988 and Applemilk1989, and then proceeded to use someone else's video to try to discredit Emily. So they're obviously far from unbiased, and in most cases, just making shit up. So I immediately have to wonder about your ability to distinguish reality from the nonsense in supermarket tabloids. Nothing on that site even approaches an honest evaluation.

As for Magibon, TokyoCooney mentioned her to Emily on their BlogTV interview and I saw none of what you suggest is her attitude toward Magibon. There even seemed to be an element of awe in her reaction. You can check it out at BlogTV. I did see a bit of a sneer during the YouTube live event when Magibon appeared, but that's hardly a federal crime.

I have seen parts of the Idol video on YouTube and it's certainly not "pornographic" by any standards I have ever seen, so again, I'm really not sure where you are getting this stuff except from some chauvinist bizarro world website.

As for her supposed crimes in regard to Japanese usage--male vs. female--the significance of which is what? That she hasn't fallen into the sexist male Japanese attitudes towards females? I would consider that a plus, not a minus. But then, I'm a progressive. I don't blindly follow the conservative norm that sees every deviation from received values as inherently evil. Here you are really indicating where you are coming from. I, for one, like independent females. Maybe you'd like the Japanese to revert to carrying samurai swords around and executing anyone who returns from a foreign country as they did during Shogun times?

As for mixing formal and informal usage, you must not be a native speaker of English, because she does similar things in her English videos. It's part of her shtick, her approach to entertainment. I mean, teaching Japanese to say "groovy"? Did you not notice that? WritingHannah has taken to doing similar things lately. It seems to be catching on.

As for her musical event, I was not there, so I have no idea what happened. Were you there or is this just more third hand innuendo from her detractors, many of whom, I have noticed, seem to have trouble with a Caucasian woman even associating with Asiatics. In fact, that seems to be the origin of much of the dislike I have noticed toward her. It is just good old fashioned white racism in a modern mold. If that's your problem with her, I'd suggest you get out a bit more.
